James Gleeson has been an important Australian artist since, as a young man in the 1930's, he started investigating Surrealism. His is the most important body of Surrealist work to be done by an Australian artist. Now ninety three years old, he is doing his greatest painting. He is a learned man who has been important as a critic and writer and he has held many important positions within the arts in Australia. Details of his career are too extensive to summarise here. From 1976-82 he was a member of the first Council of the Australian National Gallery and in 1975 he was awarded the Order of Australia for his services to art. In 1989 Macquarie University invested him with the Degree of Doctor of Letters. In 2001 James Gleeson was conferred Degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of NSW. Gleeson is in such collections as the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries and many regional Galleries and many private collections worldwide.
