About Reg Mombassa: Born in New Zealand in 1951, immigrated to Australia with his family in 1969. Attended National Art School Sydney 1969-70. Returned to art school in 1975 and obtained diploma of painting in 1977. Formed the band 'Mental as Anything' in 1976 with 4 other art students. 3 group exhibitions held by the band - 1982, 1990 and 1998. In 1987 the band painted a Melbourne tram for the ministry of arts. . He is no longer a member of the mentals - but has formed the band ' Dog Trumpet ' with his brother Peter. Reg has had regular solo exhibitions at Watters Gallery - where he began exhibiting in 1975. He is well known for his Mambo T-shirt and poster designs which he has been doing since 1986. In 1994 Mambo Graphics published the Mambo Picture Book of Wisdom - which is a collection of Reg's pictures and quotes. In 1995 Reg was commissioned by the Powerhouse Museum to produce a poster which won first prize in the Association of American Museums design competition. In 1999 Reg was invited to Milan to give a workshop to graphic artists and to give a presentation at the Triennale di Milano. In 2000 Reg designed the athletes shirts for the Sydney Olympic Games - as well as the closing ceremony which included 12 six metre high inflatables. In 2001 the Victorian Tapestry Workshop invited Reg to contribute to a Federation tapestry - and have subsequently made 4 more based on his designs. In 2002 the Visible Art Foundation selected his works for an installation at Republic Tower, Collins St, Melbourne - in which his images were enlarged. Reg has designed T-shirts, posters, postcards etc for organisations such as Greenpeace, the Rock Eisteddfod, Circus Oz, the Opera House Trust, Redfern Legal Aid, the Wilderness Society, Westmead Children's Hospital, The Powerhouse Museum amongst others. In 2003 he had the honour of being invited to open the Colin McCahon retrospective "A Question of Faith" at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2007 a retrospective exhibition was held at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney and a full colour catalogue was produced. His artwork is included in the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, The Powerhouse Museum Sydney, University of Sydney as well as many important private collections worldwide. Reg is inspired by the wind, semi-professional birthday clowns, heavy machinery and the behaviour of domestic animals. He is married with 3 children and resides in Sydney .
